Have you ever heard medical people or scientists talk about the thyroid and you keep wondering what that is? Let us get some education as we give you some understanding about the thyroid.
The thyroid is normally referred to as the thyroid gland. It is the biggest gland in the neck of a human, though not weighing more than one ounce, and it can be found below the skin and muscle layers in the front (anterior) neck. You will find the thyroid below the Adam’s apple or the larynx.
While a baby is developing in the womb, the thyroid gland starts developing from the back of the tongue and migrates later to its normal location, the front of the neck, before a baby is born. However, there are rare cases when the thyroid does not move to this location, and it settles high in the neck or remains at the back of the tongue. There are also rare cases where the thyroid migrates farther than normal and it gets settled in the chest.
The shape of the thyroid gland in your body is like that of a butterfly; two lobes, one on the right and the other on the left, are the portion of the structure of the thyroid gland that looks like the wings of a butterfly. The left and right lobes of the thyroid are wrapped around the windpipe (trachea) by a narrow band of thyroid tissues, called the isthmus.
What Function Does The Thyroid Gland Perform In The Body?
The only function that the thyroid gland performs in the body is the production of thyroid hormone which regulates the metabolism of the body. The hormone which the thyroid gland produces is one that is very essential in the body. It is so important that it produces an effect on virtually all tissues of the body. The effect so created on the body tissues is that which increases the activities of the tissues.
How Does The Thyroid Gland Perform Its Work
Your thyroid gland performs the work of regulating your body’s metabolism. It does that this way:
The iodine that is present in the different type of foods you eat is what the thyroid gland takes and converts to thyroid hormones, namely thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). This is a speciality of the thyroid gland; they are the only glands in your body that have the ability to absorb iodine.

The iodine that is absorbed by the thyroid gland is then combined with tyrosine, an amino acid, and that is what is used as raw material to manufacture the two thyroid hormones we mentioned earlier; T3 and T4.
Thereafter, the manufactured hormones, T3 and T4 are then released into the blood stream and taken round the body to perform the function of controlling the metabolism of your body.
The meaning of metabolism? Metabolism simply means the conversion of oxygen and calories into energy that our body uses to perform different activities. Every single cell in the human body is reliant on the thyroid hormones for the regulation of their metabolism.
